History of Our Parish
The Ukrainian Orthodox Parish of the Holy Trinity in Brisbane was founded on 22 June 2025 with the blessing of Metropolitan Antony Shcherba, Primate of the Ukrainian Orthodox Church in the Diaspora (Ecumenical Patriarchate). From its very beginning, the parish has been called to serve as a spiritual home for Ukrainians of different generations – both those born in Australia and those who arrived during different waves of immigration. Divine services of the parish are currently celebrated at St Fabian’s Church.
The parish is led by its rector, Fr. Yuriy Fediv, who came from Lviv, Ukraine. He carries out his pastoral ministry through the celebration of divine services, the administration of the Holy Mysteries, spiritual guidance, and prayer. His service is directed toward preserving the Orthodox faith, nurturing Ukrainian spiritual heritage, and building a vibrant parish community.
The parish provides preparation for the Holy Mysteries of Baptism, Chrismation, Confession, and Marriage, and also engages in spiritual and educational activities for both children and adults.
The Ukrainian Orthodox Parish of the Holy Trinity belongs to the Australian–New Zealand Eparchy of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church in the Diaspora (Ecumenical Patriarchate) and remains under the spiritual guidance of Metropolitan Antony Shcherba.
Parish life is enriched by the active work of the Sisterhood, Brotherhood, and the Parish Choir. Following the Divine Liturgy, the faithful are invited to remain for fellowship, refreshments, and spiritual conversation. Each month, parishioners also receive Uspenska Vezha, the oldest religious publication in Ukraine, which has been published continuously since March 1991.
The Ukrainian Orthodox presence in Brisbane has deep historical roots. It dates back to 4 March 1950, when the first parish of the Ukrainian Autocephalous Orthodox Church was established. The earliest services were celebrated in a purchased church building in the Woolloongabba area under the pastoral care of Fr. Serhii Shumskyi. In 1972, the community built the Church of the Protection of the Most Holy Theotokos, which served as a spiritual center for Ukrainian Orthodox faithful until 1993.
Today, the Parish of the Holy Trinity continues this blessed legacy, offering a place of prayer, worship, and spiritual support for all who seek God’s grace and desire to grow in faith. All are warmly invited to join in the prayerful and communal life of our parish family.
